QD-OLED vs WOLED: What Is the Difference?

Both QD-OLED and WOLED are OLED technologies: each pixel makes its own light, so blacks can be perfectly dark. They differ in how they create colour, and that affects how the screen looks.

How each one works

QD-OLED uses blue OLED light and a quantum-dot layer to produce red and green. WOLED uses white OLED light and colour filters, and usually adds a white sub-pixel to boost brightness.

Where QD-OLED tends to be strong

  • Saturated, vivid colour across the brightness range.
  • Good colour in bright scenes, since the quantum-dot layer does not filter away as much light.

Where WOLED tends to be strong

  • High peak brightness on small highlights in many models.
  • A wide choice of sizes, from monitors to large TVs.

What they share

Very deep blacks, fast pixel response and wide viewing angles. Both can show image retention if the same static image is left on screen for long periods, so use screen savers, taskbar auto-hide and the maker’s built-in protection features.

How to choose

Do not choose on panel type alone. Compare resolution, refresh rate, peak brightness, the coating (glossy or matte), ports and the warranty terms for burn-in. Then look at a real model’s spec sheet. Each product page lists those details; start with our gaming monitors, or read our general guide to choosing a gaming monitor.
