OLED vs QLED TVs: What Is the Difference?
OLED and QLED are the two names you will see most when shopping for a premium TV. They sound alike but work differently, and each has strengths.
How they make a picture
An OLED TV has pixels that produce their own light, so each pixel can switch fully off. A QLED TV is an LCD TV with a backlight and a quantum-dot layer that improves colour. Some QLED-style sets, such as Mini LED models, use many small backlight zones to control brightness more precisely.
Where OLED is strongest
- Very deep blacks and strong contrast, especially in a dim room.
- Wide viewing angles, so the picture holds up from the side.
- Fast pixel response, which suits fast motion and gaming.
Where QLED is strongest
- Generally higher peak brightness, useful in bright rooms with lots of windows.
- A wide range of sizes and prices.
- Little concern about image retention from static content.
Which should you choose?
For movie nights in a dark or dimmable room, OLED is a strong pick. For a bright living room used mostly during the day, a bright QLED or Mini LED set may be more comfortable. Whichever you choose, check the HDMI ports and refresh rate if you game.
