Gaming Laptop Overheating? What to Check

Gaming laptops pack powerful parts into a thin body, so they run hot under load. Warm is normal; a laptop that throttles, shuts down or has very loud fans deserves attention. These checks fix most cases.

Give it airflow

Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface. Beds, sofas and laps block the intake vents underneath. A stand that lifts the back edge can help air reach the fans.

Clean the vents

Dust builds up over months and chokes the fans. With the laptop off and unplugged, blow compressed air through the vents in short bursts. Do not spin the fans freely with the air jet. If the laptop is under warranty, check the maker’s guidance before opening the case.

Check the power and performance mode

Most gaming laptops have performance modes in their control software. A higher mode means more speed and more heat; a balanced or quiet mode trades speed for lower temperatures. Play plugged in, using the charger supplied or one of the correct wattage.

Cap the frame rate and lower demanding settings

Running a game far above your screen’s refresh rate creates extra heat for no visible gain. Cap the frame rate to the refresh rate and reduce the heaviest settings, such as ray tracing or very high shadows.

Update drivers and firmware

Update the graphics driver, BIOS and the manufacturer’s control software, since updates often include fan-curve and power-management fixes.

Watch the temperatures

Use a monitoring tool to see CPU and GPU temperatures during play. If they climb steadily until performance drops, or the laptop shuts down, contact the maker or a repair service; the cooling paste may need replacing.

Consider a cooling pad

A cooling pad can lower temperatures a few degrees on some laptops. It helps most when the laptop’s intakes are on the underside. See our gaming laptops and our accessories.
